in 2012 CMF Trailers enrolled in the Type approval scheme and all Trailers now produced by CMF are fully Type approved to current regulations.
CHANGES TO TRAILER REGULATIONS.
On 30th October 2012 rules for the manufacture of trailers changed.
All trailers manufactured after that date have to comply with EEC2007/46 regulations.
This means that they have to be type approved.
There are 2 ways that manufacturers can do this.
1) Manufacturers can take the full vehicle approval route whereby trailers and designs have been submitted to the VCA (vehicle certification agency,) the manufacturer then gets a licence to manufacture those designs and is given an exclusive serial number to attach to each trailer. Each licence has to be renewed after 3 years. This method is used by most volume manufacturers. (CMF Trailers manufacture Trailers under the full vehicle approval scheme.)
2) Manufacturers can take the single vehicle approval route which means the manufacturer has to submit each trailer to be tested. This method is used by one off builders.
Things to check when you buy your type approved trailer.
Each trailer must come with a certificate of conformity, this is similar to your car registration document and has the trailers VIN (vehicle identification number) on it. This shows that it complies with all of the regulations in respect of lights, brakes, wheels, mudguards etc.
Each trailer also has to have the VIN number stamped into the drawbar and also has to have a VIN plate secured to the front of the trailer displaying the individual Vin number together with relevant weights.
If your new trailer does not have the above then it is not legal to use on the road and may cause you problems should the government introduce MOTs in the future.
If you need any more info about type approval then do not hesitate to contact us at CMF trailers.
